Welcome to Reception!
Welcome to Reception/Year 1!
Welcome to our class page! My name is Miss Bullen and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Mrs Cumiskey is our amazing teaching assistant. This is a split class, through timetabling and planning we ensure that your child receives the teaching and learning that is relevant to them. The reception children engage with the reception curriculum and the year ones receive the year one curriculum. We join together for appropriate whole class activities such as our daily celebration of the word, story-times to name a couple. For more information on topics and the curriculum your child will receive please see: https://stpatricks.bhcet.org.uk/curriculum/curriculum-and-subject-areas
Useful information!
Wednesdays:
- Year 1 P.E day and year 1 Sports club after school.
Thursdays:
- Homework and reading books returned from the previous week.
Fridays:
- New homework and reading books given out.
- Reception P.E Day.
- Sports club after-school.
P.E
P.E. Kit consists of a white t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms, and suitable footwear for outdoor sport. A school jumper can still be worn for warmth. Our P.E day lines up with the Sports after school club. That way, your child will already be in their suitable clothing if you wish for them to attend.
Tapestry (Reception only)
If your child attended our Nursery they will already have a tapestry account. If your child is new to the school you will receive a permission form and will be sent an activation link. Tapestry is a secure way of recording your child’s learning and achievements. It can only be accessed by the EYFS team and yourselves. You can only view your own child’s journal. If your child is uploaded in a group setting, you can only view your child’s name/details. It cannot be seen by others. You can use tapestry to showcase any learning your child has achieved at home too!
Phonics:
Both Reception and Year one are taught using the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. The children are streamed into small groups based on several factors such as the sounds they know and blending/reading skills. These groups adapt and change as the year goes on match with what the children need.
Phonics top tips:
• We use letter sounds not names. E.g. ‘mmm’ not ‘em’.
• Please be careful not to add ‘uh’ to the end of sounds as this can cause confusion when reading words later on. E.g. ‘ruh’ instead of a crisp ‘rrr’.
• When reading words, we say the sounds individually and then blend the sounds together. E.g. mmm-ah-t…mat!

Home learning
Homework and Home Reading will both be sent out on a Friday, starting next week. Your child’s homework will be inside a folder and your child will receive a reading book each week with a reading record. They both need to be returned the following Thursday. This gives us enough time for us to read with all of the children in school and to swap books/homework ready for the following week.
Our reading scheme starts off with ‘shared reading books’. These are not intended for your child to read themselves. They are for introducing the routine of sitting down together and enjoying and sharing a school-book.
Once your child is beginning to blend letter sounds to make words, they will be given a reading book in line with their phonics ability/reading level.
The homework is usually a short task that follows what we are covering in school.
Spelling Shed
For Year 1’s, part of their homework is through Spelling Shed. Spelling Shed is a platform with comprehensive spelling progression in lessons and interactive games. Your child will be given their own log in to access the website. There is an expectation across school that at least five games are played throughout the week at home. Each game takes no more than two minutes. The word is read aloud and put into a sentence, so that the child gains a better understanding of the meaning of the word. On Fridays your child will then have a spelling test based on the words they have been assigned. Your child will then take home their spelling book so you can see what they have achieved. Inside there will also be a new list of spellings ready to practise for the following week. We give out a physical copy of the spellings as to include screen-free households.
