Welcome to Year 1!
The autumn term of year one builds on the fabulous experiences the children have had in the Early Years, providing opportunities for teacher-led learning as well as engagement in self-led learning activities with their peers. This ensures that the children continue to learn the social skills needed to work collaboratively, as well as developing their independence skills.
During this year the children will build on their phonic knowledge (daily RWInc sessions) alongside a range of other reading strategies on their journey towards becoming an independent reader and they will develop the basic skills required in writing and maths to ensure they have strong foundations in place for their learning journey.
As the year progresses, the children will develop their independence by moving from working in groups to a whole class approach which supports their transition into Year 2.
In our English work, we develop our reading and writing skills through stories, drama, poetry and exciting, first- hand experiences. Enjoyment of reading and a love of books are encouraged through individual, guided and shared reading activities we encourage the children to read every day at home, too!
In mathematics, we take part in lots of practical activities involving number, shape, space, measure, and problem- solving. We work alone, in partners, in small groups and as a class to improve our Numeracy skills and relate them to real-life situations.
During P.E. lessons, children will take part in athletics, dance and gymnastic activities and need to be in their P.E. kit on Wednesdays.
This term in R.E., we will be learning all about Families, Belonging, Judaism and Advent. We will develop our knowledge of prayers, Catholic Social Teaching and deepen our understanding of our class saint, St Benedict.
This half term in History, we will be discovering facts and information about James Cook.
In Science, we are learning about Animals including humans. The children will learn about how we can sort animals and the different parts of the human body.
