Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.’ Proverbs 22:6

Welcome message.

Welcome to the Year 4/5 class page! We are a hardworking and industrious class with a thirst for knowledge. Our class Saint, Saint Sebastian, helps guide us throughout the year as we are inspired by his message of courage.

Class information

P.E.

P.E. will be on a Monday, children will be come into school in their kits ready for P.E. this will consist of a white t shirt, tracksuit bottoms and suitable footwear. A school jumper can still be worn for warmth. Long hair must be tied back and no earrings to be worn. Children in Y5 will be swimming at least 3 weeks throughout the year, details will be sent out the week before they go.

Reading

In Year 4/5, we promote reading for pleasure and aim to offer our children a wide range of exciting children’s literature. It is essential that children read at home as regular reading can have a significant impact on children’s learning and confidence across the curriculum. This year, children will receive books to read at their assessed reading level from school for the week. These books will be changed every Friday. Although your child may read independently, please continue to sign their home reading record

Homework

At the beginning of the year, your child will have brought home log in details for Purple Mash, Times Tables Rockstars and Spelling Shed. It is expected that children should spend 10 minutes each on their times tables, spellings and reading each night. Longer pieces of homework will be sent out where it is appropriate to the child’s learning.

Times Tables

The ability to recall your tables quickly underpins all we learn in Maths. That is why we spend 15 minutes a day in school practicing these and recommend you do the same at home via Times Tables Rockstars. For those in Y4 there will be a mandatory test in June. More information on this test can be found on https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/multiplication-tables-check

Spellings

Spellings are set on a weekly basis and are catered for the year group your child is in. Each week, your child will be given a test based on a spelling rule. This will be tested on a Friday. They will also be given 5 words to practice from the governments key spellings lists for Y3/4 and Y5/6.

We look forward to a successful year,

Mr Fletcher
